Narm® Therapist in Training, Couples Counselor, Family Therapist

Introduction

Many adults—whether alone, as a couple, or within a family—find it difficult to express their wishes and longings. Some feel at a loss: the path forward seems blocked. Others simply don’t know how to go about finding what they’re looking for. In our work together—whether on your own, with your partner, or with your family—you’ll discover, step by step, what you truly desire deep down, what obstacles stand in your way, and how a new, vibrant, authentic form of connection with yourself and others can develop over the long term.

Who I Am

For many years, I was a writer and producer of feature stories and documentaries, as well as a screenwriter, before I decided—encouraged by friends, my therapist, my wife (who works as a Gestalt and trauma therapist), and my two now-adult children—to become a therapist. My father was also a systemic family therapist and a child and adolescent psychiatrist.

The Danish family therapist and educator Jesper Juul was my greatest source of inspiration and the reason I undertook a four-year training program at the German-Danish Institute for Family Therapy in Berlin, which I completed in 2025. In 2026, I successfully passed the exam to become a licensed alternative practitioner in psychotherapy in Berlin and began additional training in the treatment of developmental trauma using the NARM® method developed by American psychologist Laurence Heller, which I will complete by the end of 2027. Since 2023, I have been working in my practice in Berlin-Mitte as a couples counselor and family therapist, and since 2026 as a trauma therapist using the NARM® method.

How I Work with Families

Juul’s approach is based on the principles of equality between children and adults, on authentic and responsible communication, and on parents acting in the same way toward their children. According to Juul, disturbances in the family system or behavioral problems have nothing to do with a lack of willingness to cooperate on the part of children or adolescents, but rather with hidden or overt conflicts, tensions, or dishonesty on the part of the parents.

Although parents hold the leadership role in the family, the goal is not to criticize them for their behavior. Rather, we begin by asking what underlying needs drive the children’s actions and what influences and patterns are at play on the parents’ side. Together, we explore how the problems and challenges that have arisen in the family can be traced back to their emotional core, what feelings, expectations, and needs emerge in the process, and how family dynamics can change. As parents come into more authentic contact with themselves and take full responsibility for themselves and their leadership role, the tensions between them and with their children dissolve. The children and adolescents are released from their excessive responsibility for the family. This also creates more space for them to develop independently.

How I Work with Couples

I create the framework and ground rules that enable you to listen to one another, connect, and accept each other with an open mind in a new, safe space. In this way, ingrained reaction patterns and mutual recriminations can be replaced, step by step, with new words, thoughts, and actions.

I encourage you to finally express feelings and needs that you’ve held back for a long time, while staying in touch with yourselves individually and with one another—without fear of encountering a lack of understanding or rejection from the other person. As you practice these skills and, at the same time, learn to be more accepting of your partner—with all their differences and their need for autonomy—a tangible and experiential space will emerge between you, allowing for a deeper, more authentic, and more fulfilling connection.

Individual Therapy—How I Work with Developmental Trauma Using the NARM® Method

I offer you a safe, private space where you can find the time and tranquility to allow all your emotions to surface, enabling you to get to know and accept yourself more deeply within your soul. For I am deeply convinced that the solution to your questions and problems already exists within you, and that your true core can only be uncovered and brought to light by you yourself. Only you know what you want and need—and what you don’t.

In this space, your true desires and needs gradually become clearer and clearer. The obstacles standing in their way become more tangible. You’ll find a new way to understand what led you, during your childhood, to sever your authentic connection with yourself—to feel ashamed of who you are and to seek strategies for maintaining contact with your closest caregivers.

Step by step, you’ll become more aware of your (self-)shaming and self-blaming behaviors. You’ll learn to distinguish between your child self and your adult self—between old, self-judgmental thought patterns and your ability, in the here and now, to make your own decisions and take action. As you treat yourself with ever-greater understanding and compassion, you’ll rediscover authentic self-expression, inner freedom, and a zest for life. Your growing self-confidence and the courage to be vulnerable will transform you into a more whole, self-assured person who can share their thoughts and feelings openly and honestly.
